This weekend, the kids (and volunteers- Yee, Shuiji and Daniel) have utilized their time and energy to help a Nang's (a kid under the care of SSF) family in the Srey Prasal village with the process of planting rice. This means roughing it out under the sun, getting muddy from head to toe and a lot of teamwork with the rice (in the fields and cooking in the kitchen).
To the amazement of the volunteers, these kids displayed a contrasting image in the fields compared to their English classes. With the classes, these kids can be shy, unsure, and be just plain open to whatever the teacher has to say. In the fields however, they illustrate such certainty and confidence (and speed!) to the extent of being teachers to their teachers. The volunteers were taught hand techniques on poking holes and covering them up after plants have been sown as well as pulling out matured rice plants for transplanting and breeding.
We turn this bundle:
And all this hard work:
To this:
Sure, all this may sound easy but when you’re under 35 degrees Celsius of direct sunlight, the last thing you would want is to slow everybody down. So, these volunteers were taught proper techniques handed down from generations of farming to speed things up and ensure maximum success of these plants. Words alone would not be enough and below, you will see more pictures that show you what a beautiful time everyone had.
Lunch!
Wash-up...also done communally like everything else
We came back the same way we got there- by 'romok'
